Guang Wu Shuai Jiao | Tradition, Evolution, & Dedication
Guang Wu Shuai Jiao was founded in Beijing by Head Coach Liu Zu Guang and his senior student Sonny Mannon with the intention to spread the art of Beijing Style Shuai Jiao. Guang Wu Shuai Jiao has conducted international trainings for over since 2012 years. In partner with the Greek Shuai Jiao union, Guang Wu Shuai Jiao also launched its Instructor Training Program in Europe, which now cooperates with 15 schools in Greece and has helped them produce athletes who have competed and won on the international stage.

The Guang Wu Shuai Jiao curriculum is based off of traditional Beijing Shuai Jiao training methods and has been proven to produce skilled, knowledgeable wrestlers. Historically only skilled martial artists with previous experience were accepted into Shuai Jiao training, but through experience with hundreds of students, Master Liu and Sonny have developed a clear and concise teaching method which will produce results for anyone willing to put in the time and work.
Beijing Shuai Jiao | A Highly Efficient & Sophisticated System
Beijing Shuai Jiao uses a mixture of internal and external principles for a clear and logical development of physical attributes and skill. What sets it apart is its efficient training methods, technical breakdown of throws and exercises, and the sophisticated use of grip skills for controlling your opponent and setting up techniques.
True Beijing Shuai Jiao is incredibly rare outside of mainland China, but its effectiveness and training techniques are second to none when it comes to producing skilled wrestlers. While Shuai Jiao has thousands of years of history and has assimilated techniques from all over China, Beijing is the center of development of modern Shuai Jiao being home to the famed Shan Pu Ying wrestlers of the Qing dynasty. After the fall of the empire Beijing was the home to many famous wrestlers who preserved the training methods and traditions from the golden age of Shuai Jiao and to this day continue to evolve and progress their skill through constant competition and use.

Founders | A Shared Passion & DedicationMaster Liu Zu Guang founded Guang Wu Shuai Jiao because of his passion for the art and for what he saw as a lack of understanding of Beijing Shuai Jiao on an international level. Master Liu began training Shuai Jiao at the age of 12. He trained intensively under Master Li Bao Ru, one of the most famous and knowledgable Shuai Jiao teachers alive today, as well under several other accomplished teachers. As an athlete, Master Liu competed both locally and nationally for many years and won the Beijing city tournament several years in a row. He is a tireless coach, always trying to improve his knowledge of Shuai Jiao to better help his students.

Sonny Mannon has been a martial artist for almost 20 years and lived in Beijing from 2007 to 2015 where he trained Shuai Jiao full time under Master Liu. He is the only foreigner to have continuously studied Shuai Jiao in China for that length of time. Sonny has competed in Shuai Jiao tournaments both in China and internationally. Because of Sonny’s ability to speak and read Chinese, he was able to research Shuai Jiao through interviews with famous teachers, through training sessions with different schools, and from the few published texts in Chinese on Shuai Jiao to a degree rarely seen outside of China. Sonny has taught Shuai Jiao seminars all over the world.

Shuai Jiao Styles
It is commonly said that there are three main types of Shuai Jiao; Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei. This is somewhat incorrect. While the three areas do have different flavors to their practice, they are not distinct enough to really warrant being separated into different styles. Shuai Jiao was historically centered in Beijing due to its patronage from the Emperor and the Shan Pu Ying wrestlers of the Qing dynasty. After the fall of the dynasty and the dissolution of the Shan Pu Ying, wrestlers left Beijing and went to different areas of China. The Shuai Jiao tradition mixed somewhat with the local martial tradition which is particularly strong in Hebei and Tianjin. However, it can be said with assurance that the Beijing style of Shuai Jiao is the most similar to what was practiced by the imperial wrestlers.
A note must be said regarding the art of Baoding Kuai Jiao which was taught by the great master Chang Dong Sheng from Hebei province. The Baoding Kuai Jiao style from Taiwan evolved during Master Chang’s time teaching in Taiwan and is now represented by his students and his family in Taiwan, some of whom have spread out to Europe, the United States, and South America. It is of my opinion that this style of Shuai Jiao is distinct enough from what is practiced in the mainland to be considered its own style. Currently Baoding Kuai Jiao is the most practiced form of Shuai Jiao outside of mainland China, but is practically non-existent on the mainland.
